Seminar on Deceased Organ Donation for Staff Nurses and Students of SRIHER on National Organ Donation Day

  • On 27th November 2019, commemorating National Organ Donation Day, MOHAN Foundation conducted a seminar on Organ Donation at Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER), Porur, Chennai. The audience was around 100 newly inducted staff nurses at the hospital and students of nursing and allied health sciences.

    The day started with a students’ rally, poster exhibition and a donor felicitation program organized by the Liver Transplant division of the hospital.  Following the felicitation the nursing students enacted a small play based on a true story.

    For the seminar Dr. Hemal Kanvinde and Ms. Sujatha Suriyamoorthi of MOHAN Foundation were the resource persons. Mr. Jerin Rajan of MOHAN Foundation accompanied as an observer and assisted with the conducting of the seminar. Apart from the lectures, MOHAN Foundation also set up the “Life Before Ashes” exhibit outside the seminar hall. During the tea break the audience had the opportunity to view the exhibit.

    Concepts of Organ Donation were explained by Dr. Hemal, covering the topics of why, when, how and who can donate organs. A film explaining brain death was played for the students, followed by a session on grief counseling and deceased organ donation coordination by Ms. Sujatha, who explained the role with a case study.  The seminar came to a close with a motivational film being played.
