Organ Donation Awareness Talk at Pawan Bhumi Senior Citizen Society

  • On 22nd March 2019 Dr. Ravi Wankhede, Director of MOHAN Foundation Nagpur and Mr. Bulu Behera, Transplant Co-ordinator MOHAN Foundation were invited by Mr. Salim Ajani to Pawan Bhumi Senior Citizen Association at Somalwada in Wardha Road, Nagpur. The occasion was a get together for the members of the Senior Citizen Association and the talk was on deceased organ donation. Mr. Raju Nakhele - Secretary, Mr. Narendra Khante - President and other members were present.

    Dr. Wankhede’s talk touched upon topics like organs that can be donated after brain death, natural death and while living; possibility of coming back to life after brain death and how the families of brain dead patients can help several other families if they agree to donate the organs of their loved ones.

    Brain dead patients can donate several organs such as heart, liver, kidney, lungs, pancreas, and tissues like arteries, skin, eyes etc. After natural death several tissues such as skin, eyes, bones, heart valves etc. could be donated and a living person can donate several organs such as one kidney, part of liver, lungs, pancreas, and bone marrow etc.  

    Dr. Wankhede gave information about MOHAN Foundation’s activities and requested them to use MOHAN Foundation website as well as helpline number in case of queries. Approximately 35 participants were present, and 3 of them signed consent form and collected donor cards.

    A few questions raised by the senior citizens:

    • What is the process for voluntary whole body donation?
    • Who should be contacted for organ donation in case of brain death?

    What is the process for eye donation?
