NIT, Trichy students include “Uyir”- Living By Giving during their annual festival

  • The Organising Committee of the 2018 annual festival PRAGYAN 2018 of National Institute of Technology (NIT) - Trichy, initiated a unique awareness drive on organ donation called Uyir - Living by Giving to promote the importance of organ donation. To begin this campaign, on 23rd February 2018, the committee invited MOHAN Foundation for an awareness program on Organ Donation for its students. Mr. Ruban Victor, Marketing Manager represented MOHAN Foundation.

    Ms. Aishwarya of the Pragyan team started the program with a welcome speech by explaining the Campaign on Organ Donation and the importance of students supporting the noble cause, following which a session on Concepts of Organ Donation was addressed by Mr. Ruban Victor.

    The session enlightened the students on various concepts of organ donation like,

    • Who is a live donor? What are the organs that can be donated?
    • Difference between live related and unrelated donors
    • Different forms of death, the tissue and organ donation under each type
    • Functions of brain stem, causes of brain death
    • Organ donation and ischemic time for organs
    • Cornea donation
    • Organ allocation criteria  
    • Importance of organ donor card was explained

    The program was very interactive. Adding more to the session was a student who shared her experience when her family came forward to donate the corneas of her grandfather. The session ended with the screening of the video “Thank you Donor”. After the session a special online link for registering as an organ donor was launched by the Pragyan team. Around 200 students attended the awareness session.
