  On August 4 and 5, 2023, Manipal Organ Sharing & Transplant (MOST) organised a workshop on "Donation after Circulatory Determination of Death (DCDD) in India: The Way Forward" in association with MOHAN Foundation (MF) and under the aegis of the National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) at Hotel Ramada, Gurugram. Dr (Col) Avnish Seth, VSM, and Head MOST, hosted the summit.

   

  A multidisciplinary group of experts from Spain, the UK, Australia, and India came together to discuss ways to take DCDD forward. From the MOHAN Foundation, Dr Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee, Ms. Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director, and Ms. Pallavi Kumar, Executive Director, along with her Delhi team, attended the summit.

   

  The primary purpose of the conference was to discuss standard operating procedures and protocols, considering local ethical, social, and cultural sensitivities, to increase the donor pool. And to address the critical success factors for the DCDD programme: careful donor selection, family support, early determination of impending death or death, an optimal "no-touch" period to minimise ischemic injury, and the use of techniques and technologies to facilitate organ preservation and repair.

   

  Various topics were addressed in the workshop, such as the declaration of brain death, international organ donor and directed deceased donation, India being ready for an opt-out system, status of deceased organ donation and transplantation in India, organ donation and transplantation: world perspective, DCDD in India (legalities, types, documentation, and experience), Supreme Court judgement, 2023, establishing futility of treatment, DCDD III and IV, DCDD will reduce organ donation after brain death in India, The national protocol for organ preservation and retrieval, the DCDD kidney, liver, heart, and lung transplantation protocol, and the panel discussion on DCDD also took place.

   

  Dr Shroff addressed the attendees about the DCDD in India, its legality type, documentation, and experience related to the DCDD. Ms. Pallavi shed light on some cases of international organ donors and directed deceased donations.
