Donate organs, save lives; Donate Body, help medical education - Theme for a CME conducted by MOHAN Foundation

  • A CME for doctors and students was organised by Dr. Kalpana, Prof and Head, Dept. Of Anatomy,  of the Sri Muthukumaran Medical College Hospital and Research Institute (SMMCH & RI) Mangadu on 5thFebruary 2015. The topic for the CME was Body Donation, Deceased Organ Donation and Transplantation.

     

    The CME was inaugurated by the Dean, Dr. V. S. Dorairaj; Medical Superintendent, Prof. A. P. Sambandan; Vice Principal Prof. A. Manamalli of SMMCH and Prof. Sunil Shroff, Managing Trustee of MOHAN Foundation.

     

    In his talk titled ‘Concepts of Deceased Donor Transplantation In India’ Dr. Shroff touched upon the enormous need for life saving organs, state statistics on organ donation and why Chennai is the leader in this very complex field. He spoke on the key factors that motivate people to say yes to donation and about the training program for Transplant Coordinators.

     

    Dr Sumana Navin, Course Director, spoke on Body donation- the legal and the practical aspects. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer, spoke on the Transplant Law of India and Mrs. Sujatha Niranjan, Manager Information Systems, spoke in detail about the Counselling of Relatives for Organ Donation and how MOHAN Foundation trains students in grief counselling.

     

    At the end of the CME a Vote of Thanks was delivered by Dr. M. V. Mahajan Assoc. Prof, Dept of Anantomy SMMCH & RI.  Nearly 300 students and staff were present at the CME. More than 150 students pledged their organs and picked a donor card.
