To commemorate Organ Donation Day, Tagore Medical College organised a CME on Organ Donation on 19th August 2019. Dr. Sree T. Sucharitha, Associate Prof of the Department of Community Medicine invited MOHAN Foundation to give a talk on organ donation. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer was deputed to give the talk. Around 150 students from II and III year attended the CME along with about 10 faculty members.
Green ribbons and information brochures were handed to the students at the start of the session. The CME began with a welcome address by Dr. A. Balaji, Head and Prof, Department of Community Medicine. This was followed by an introduction to the theme by Dr. K. Sivaprakasam, Medical Superintendent of the medical college. He spoke of the initiation of the Organ Donation programme in Stanley Medical College and Hospital. He recollected the first liver transplant performed and how a new department of Transplant Surgery was established in a Government medical college.
Dr. Sucharita explained the relation shared by MOHAN Foundation and the medical college. She played a video created by the Angels of Change volunteers of the college, which has been used by them for public awareness.
This was followed by the CME talk on concepts of organ donation by Dr. Hemal. She explained the need for donation followed by the how, when and what of organ donation and brain death. She spoke on the national and international statistics, government policies, hospital protocols, transplant law and system of organ allocation. She elaborated on how to help clear the doubts in people’s minds regarding the donation of organs. She also explained the process of registration for organ failure patients on the government waiting lists and how to pledge for organ donation.
The discussion post the talk was on brain death certification, organ theft, family discussion, organ allocation, transplantation for poor patients, how to initiate donation in hospitals and outcomes of transplants.
