Talk by Professor Gurch Randhawa on Public engagement in Organ Donation and Transplantation at Hotel Broadway, Delhi

  • On December 13, 2013, MOHAN Foundation invited Professor Gurch Randhawa to deliver a talk on Public Engagement in Organ Donation and Transplantation. This is also the title of his latest book which was introduced to a distinguished set of medical professionals both from the private and government hospitals of Delhi-NCR.

    Dr. Gurch Randhawa (Professor of Diversity in Public Health & Director, University of Bedfordshire) was visiting India on a personal visit and was gracious enough to spend an evening sharing his experiences on public engagement strategies in the UK. Gurch was recently a member of the Department of Health’s Organ Donation Taskforce. As part of the work of the Taskforce, he was Chair of the Social & Cultural Expert Working Group and undertook a series of individual meetings with the UK’s Faith and Belief Leaders to discuss organ donation. His talk gave a fresh insight on how we can gain a better understanding of public hopes and fears, interests and concerns about particular developments within organ donation and transplantation and some effective strategies, to address and engage with various sections of the population.

    MOHAN Foundation invited doctors, transplant coordinators and others interested in deceased organ donation. Delegates from Army R R, AIIMS, GB Pant, RML, Apollo, Medanta, Batra were present and participated in the proceedings.

    Sh S C L Das, Principal Secretary, Department of Health & FW, Govt of NCT of Delhi was also present on the occasion along with Mr S B Shashank, Special Secretary (Health) & Drugs Controller. Also present for the talk was Mr P K Tripathi, Chairman Public Grievances Commission ( superannuated as Chief Secretary Govt. NCT of Delhi)

    Post Dr Randhawa’s talk, an active interaction took place on the UK Model of Organ Transplantation and the Importance of connecting with a wider base of masses through active campaigns. Strong emphasis was laid on the role of NGOs and public bodies that bridge the communication in such a cause.

    Professor Randhawa also introduced his book “Public Engagement in Organ Donation and Transplantation” and welcomed inputs for his next edition which would have cases and chapters contributed by the stakeholders across the spectrum
