IIT Madras organizes Organ Donation Awareness in the memory of their Professor

  • MOHAN Foundation was invited for an Organ Donation Awareness Program for the NSS Student Volunteers and Staff in association with Voluntary Blood and Eye Donor's Club of IIT Madras on 05th March 2018 at 05:00 PM. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer and Mr. Siva Shankar, Helpline Executive conducted this session.  More than 200 students attended the talk.

    The program was conducted in the memory of Prof. Tulapurkara who is an eye donor and body donor, and the founding member of the Club. The session started with issuing Organ Donation Brochures and Green Ribbons to all the students gathered.

    NSS Coordinator Dr. Shivakumar gave the welcome speech and Club Incharge Dr. S. Karmalkar explained the genesis of the Club. The first session was on Organ Donation by Dr. Hemal Kanvinde to start the session. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde started the session with the history and activities of MOHAN Foundation. She showed the old donor card and the upgraded donor card during the session.

    The session continued with the Concepts of Organ Donation, by explaining the types of donors, the organs that can be donated at the stage of living and after death, brain death and its causes. In the between the presentation she quizzed the students using Tamil Movies to make the session like more entertaining. She showed the demand and supply for organs in our country. She further explained the need of donor card.

    The session was then continued by the Dr. Hari Babu, Sankara Nethralaya sharing the details of eye donation. The coordinator shared that 1/4th people in India are corneal blind and they are in need of corneas. At the end a short video was played in support of eye donation.

    Next session was about the need of Blood Donation, Dr. J. Balasubramaniam, the Director of the Rotary Central – TTK VHS Blood Bank  explained how blood donation is done, the age for blood donation, the tests that are taken for blood donation. He also explained the new advances in donation of blood and different components, the simplicity in the way you can save lives.

    The entire session went on for 1 ½ hour. There were some questions that were asked. They are

    1. When is Body Donation done?
    2. How will the coordinator start the topic of organ donation with the family?
    3. Will organ donation happen if the family denies at the end?

    After the entire session got over each Speaker was felicitated with gifts. MOHAN Foundation thanks NSS Coordinator and the Club In-charge of IIT Madras for organizing the event and including organ donation as part of the talk.
