Awareness Session on Organ Donation conducted by MOHAN Foundation at Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, JIPMER, Puducherry

  • On 25th September, 2013 an awareness session on organ donation and transplantation was organized at the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry. Three different sessions were conducted for the nursing staff at the ward, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the operation theatre. The sessions were conducted by Mr. Ananth. R, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation, Chennai.

     

    In his sessions he covered the following topics: types of donors; difference between natural death and brain death; difference between brain death and coma; organs that can be donated, the number of hours the various organs can be preserved before transplantation; and the importance of the donor card. Also; a video on identification, maintenance and certification of brain death was screened at the sessions.

     

    There were a total of 34 nurses who participated in the sessions. All of them picked up a donor card.
