Students teach parents and fellow students about organ donation at Club Expo 2014 at Senthil Public School, Salem

  • On 19th and 20th December 2014, Senthil Public School celebrated Senthil’s Millennium Club Expo 2014.  They arranged different activities for the students through clubs like Health club, Tamil club, English club and Math club. On behalf of health club they invited MOHAN Foundation to train the students about organ donation. Mr. Jeyabal M, Transplant coordinator was deputed to Salem to assist the students.   Earlier Mr. Prakash  was deputed to explain about the concept to the entire high school and  to conduct a special session for the peer education group.

     

    On 18th December afternoon, the transplant coordinator and student members of health club set up the stall in the Xth standard class room.  Posters  and slogans on organ donation were stuck and the students practiced and honed their skills in presenting their ideas on organ donation.  They explained the importance of  healthy organs, diseases that cause the failure of the organs, brain death and organ donation. Dhanesh Kumar, student president, Health club was asked to give a presentation on Organ Donation.  Jeyabal then coached him and corrected some of the points and also shared a short video on  brain death.

     

    The next day on 19th December, the programme began  with an inaugural function. During the inaugural function School Chairman Senthil C. Kandaswamy, Correspondent Deepthi Dhanasekaran, Secretary Mr. Dhansekaran and Principal Sreenivasan delivered the talk on different clubs.  

     

    The Principal had sent invitation to other schools to visit and view the Club Expo. Parents and students  of  Senthil school and other schools visited the stall and encouraged the students. Apart from Organ Donation the Health Club had stalls on home based remedies and first aid. 

     

    In the stall on organ donation – a presentation on  organ donation  and videos were shown by the students. They explained the importance of healthy organs, diseases that cause the failure of the organs, brain death and organ donation. Dhanesh Kumar, student president, Health club was asked to give a presentation on Organ Donation On 20th December the students showed more confidence.  During the programme, transplant coordinator helped  the students in the registration desk as well as in their presentation.  

     

    Nearly 500 parents visited the stall. More than 150 parents and teachers registered as organ donors and picked a donor card. This initiative of training students to become peer educators was organised by  Ms Vimala of the school.
