Organ Donation Awareness for Police Officials at Police Training College, Chennai

  • MOHAN Foundation was invited to conduct an awareness session for police personnel at the Police Training College in Chennai on 23rd October 2019. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde – Quality Assurance Officer and Mr. Siva Shankar T S – Marketing Coordinator from MOHAN Foundation and Ms. Shankari Devi – Senior Associate Executive and Ms. Benzi George – Associate Executive, deputed from the Transplant Authority Government of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN) were the resource people.

    The session was attended by a group of Sub-Inspectors and Inspectors. The session began with an explanation of the concepts of organ donation by Mr. Siva Shankar and the following topics were discussed:

    • Organ donation and the need for it
    • Types of donors and the organs that can be donated while living and after death
    • Definition of death
    • Transplants performed so far in Tamil Nadu and the transplant waitlist in Tamil Nadu

    The session was then followed by a discussion around the government orders pertaining to organ donation that are followed by the Tamil Nadu state led by Ms. Shankari Devi. Dr. Hemal Kanvinde then took over to explain the law on organ donation and transplantation of the country. The topics that were covered were:

    • Various forms that need to be filled out during an organ donation case in a hospital
    • The offences and penalties corresponding to malpractices in the field stated in the law

    The session went on for 2 hours and around 98 police officials attended it. MOHAN Foundation thanks the Police Training College for supporting the social cause.
