On August 3rd 2019, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness talk on organ donation at Shikshak Sahakari Bank in Gandhi Sagar, Nagpur. The programme was organized by Dr. Ravi Wankhede (Director of MOHAN Foundation,Nagpur) and coordinated by Mrs. Sarita Vijay Chaurasia (President of Adarsh Chaurasia Ladies Club, Nagpur). Dr. Wankhede was also the resource person for the session.
Present at the session were Smt. Sarita Vijay Chaurasia, Dr. Ravi Wankhede, Sri. Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay, Commissioner of Police, Nagpur, Smt. Nanda Jichkar, Mayor of Nagpur and other expert members.
The session began with an inspiring video on organ donation. Dr. Wankhede spoke about the huge gap between the demand and supply of organ in India and explained the reason as to why other European countries have much higher organ donation rates compared to India.
Dr. Wankhede explained with the help of a PPT, cause of brain death and difference between coma and brain death were also elaborated on. The Transplantation of Human Organs Act 1994 was briefly discussed and its essential objectives were covered. The myths and misconceptions related to organ donation were also highlighted. Dr. Wankhede also explained the process of corneal donation, the role of ZTCC in organ donation, MOHAN Foundation’s activities and requested those present to use the toll-free helpline number when required.
The Commissioner of Police, Nagpur also spoke a few words regarding organ donation and a Hindu Pandit present at the event briefed on the history of organ donation as well.
The programme was very interactive and around 110 people were present at the event and 30 of them signed consent forms and received donor cards. MOHAN Foundation is thankful to the organisers for the opportunity.
