The Department of Commerce of the Rathinavel Subramaniam College of Arts & Science had organized an event for its students to learn about organ donation and its importance. The programme was organized in association with TRANSTAN, the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu and the NSS. It was held on 5th February 2019 in the VM Hall at the college premises in Sulur, Coimbatore.
The event began with the recital of the Tamil Thai Vazhthu, following which Mrs. Shajitha, Assistant Professor of the Business Department delivered the welcome address. Mr. R N Vivekanandar, HOD of Commerce invited and introduced Mr. Dileep Kumar S, Transplant Coordinator from MOHAN Foundation, the special guest for the event.
Mr. Dileep began his talk by saying how organ donation should be seen as a way of life and went on to discuss lack of awareness and reluctance of people as the main hurdles to be overcome. Talking about Tamil Nadu’s performance in the field, he mentioned that despite being a forerunner, only 0.05 percent of the average organ requirement of the state is being met per year.
He also explained the formalities involved in registering as organ donors, registration in case of organ requirement at hospitals and TNOS. Brain death and the process of organ donation following brain death in hospitals were also explained.
Mr. Dileep emphasized that it is important that students understand the importance of organ donation and work towards creating awareness.
The event came to a close with Mr. V. Rajkumar, Assistant Professor of Commerce department thanking everyone and singing of the national anthem.
