MOHAN Foundation invited to conduct organ donation awareness session at Queen’s Valley School, Dwarka, New Delhi

  • On December 6, 2022, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness session on organ donation for the students of IX and XI of Queens Valley School, Dwarka, New Delhi. Ms. Savneet, Coordinator, Queen’s Valley School contacted Dr. Muneet Kaur Sahi, Programme Manager, MOHAN Foundation, NCR to conduct the session on organ donation for the students of their school. Dr. Muneet, accompanied by Ms. Simran Anand, Program Officer, MOHAN Foundation, was invited as a resource person for the session.

     

    Queen's Valley School Dwarka, New Delhi was established in 2009. It is a Senior Secondary English Medium private school, it is affiliated to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). The School is a Girls Day School, with classes from Nursery to XII and managed by Durga Parvati Khaitan Memorial Centre.

     

    The session was attended by the students of eight different sections of class IX and XI along with eight teachers. Dr. Muneet and Ms. Simran were welcomed and introduced by a class X student Anshika, Student Coordinator of the school.

     

    Dr. Muneet started the session by asking the students about their understanding of organ donation. Then a short movie of hand transplant was shown to the students. Dr. Muneet then explained the concept of organ donation with the help of a PowerPoint presentation. She initiated the session by asking, according to them, why are organ transplants needed? She then, discussed with them organs which can be donated after natural death and brain death and asked students about their views on donation after death. She also discussed MOHAN Foundation's role and how youth can serve as ambassadors for the cause of organ donation. A short informative film was shown to the audience to explain the concept of "brain death."

    • Organs that can be donated during life and after death
    • Cornea donation

     

    The participants were very interactive and attentive during the presentation and asked many queries. To name a few: 

    • Can we, as students, donate organs?
    • Can we donate organs after recovering from a disease?
    • What's the distinction between coma and brain death?
    • Can eye donation take place despite poor vision?
    • Is directed donation possible in brain death cases?
    • Can a person with a history of psychiatric disorders donate organs?

     

    At the close of the session, Dr. Muneet shared with the students the MOHAN Foundation’s Angels of Change-Ambassador training course. A course where selected students are taken through a customised training module to enable them to undertake awareness initiatives on organ donation amongst various audiences. The objective of the training is to sensitise and train student volunteers as agents of change for organ donation, make them proficient enough to conduct public awareness sessions independently, and encourage them to conduct awareness sessions with their peers or other target audiences.

     

    Many students showed keenness to enrol in the course, and interested students were told to register their names with the teacher coordinator.

     

    Close to 400 students attended the session.
