  • On 27th September, 2013 MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness session on organ donation and organ transplantation at Chettinad Hari Shree Vidyalayam, R. A. Puram, Chennai. The students from classes 8, 9, 11, 12 and few teachers attended the session. Ms. Kavitha S, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation, Chennai represented the Foundation and educated the audience about the issue.

Ms. Kavitha started her presentation by citing examples from the Bhagavad Gita, a Hindu spiritual text to exemplify that religion does allow organ donation.  Following that; she elaborated on the functions of all the major organs in the human body, how to keep them healthy, types of organ donors, difference between brain death and cardiac death, difference between brain death and coma, organs that can be donated, the number of hours the various organs can be preserved before being transplanted and about the importance of the donor card. Also, a video on the topic was screened at the session to further help them understand.

There were a total of 80 students and 10 teachers who participated in the session. Few interesting questions were raised by the kids like whether the transplanted organ can be donated again and is it really necessary for us to inform our parents if we wish to donate our organs after death.  All the queries were answered and brochures with detailed information about the issue were distributed among the participants and few donor cards were left with the teachers for those interested to pick it up after getting the consent from their parents.
