Stakeholders meeting to develop deceased organ donation in Puducherry

  • MOHAN Foundation organized a stakeholders meeting to discuss the deceased donor organ transplant program and to begin an organ registry in Puducherry and invited the transplant centers in Puducherry for a dinner meeting on 17th November 2016. The meeting was held at hotel Le Royal Park Pondy. 25 Representatives from DME, JIPMER, PIMS and MGMCRI and Aishwarya Trust participated in the event.

    Dr. Rajeevalochana, PIMS welcomed everyone and this was followed by a brief presentation by Dr. Sunil Shroff, Managing trustee of MOHAN Foundation on the deceased organ donation program in other states and how it started. Dr. J Amalorpavanathan, former Member Secretary of TRANSTAN  explained how Tamil Nadu has become an excellent model with the help of the state government and things which need to be done for making Puducherry the next model transplant program. The last speaker was Dr. Sreejith, from JIPMER who spoke on the deceased organ donation program in JIPMER and protocol which is followed for deceased donor organ transplants.

    The second session then began as a group discussion, where all the representatives from the transplant centers discussed how to improve deceased donor organ transplant program in Puducherry and also on sharing the organs among other hospitals in the state as well as other states. The members requested the Director of Medical Services to start an Appropriate Authority in Puducherry. All the members decided to meet twice a month to follow up the program and also to submit the minutes of the meeting to Dr. Raman, Director of Medical Services, Puducherry.
