Romania’s government has unveiled major healthcare reforms aimed at bringing the country's ailing system closer to European Union standards as it gears up to join the bloc as early as 2007.The government will help build eight emergency hospitals in 2007,modernise around 20 big units and direct more state funds towards general practitioners.

The plan foresees the creation of a nationwide organ donation and transplantation program, in line with EU norms. This has brought cheers to people suffering from organ failures.

Romania suffers problems with the health sector as it is ridden by scandals and rampant corruption among its medical professionals .If the organ donation and transplantation program is introduced, without a proper system to monitor it may lead to chaos as the World Bank report says

''A Caesarean section costs 1,000 euros (in bribes to the doctor) to get it done properly,'' he said. ''Our reform package aims to deeply reform the system, eliminate graft and change the public perception.'' Most patients pay doctors and nurses extra cash to ensure proper care in Romania, seen as one of the most corrupt countries in Europe. In 2004, bribes for health services cost Romanians around $360 million.

So in order to have a clean organ donation and Transplantation program it is imperative to have a credible and transparent system and the Romanian government is all set to put it in place.
