Updated on Tuesday, September 10, 2013
  • On September 4th and 5th, 2013 a two day campaign on organ donation was organised at Shivaji College, Rajouri Garden, New Delhi. Shivaji College is a constituent college of the University of Delhi. The initiative was inspired by the recently conducted Times of India week long campaign on organ donation between 29th July, 2013 and 5th August, 2013; culminating on 6th August which was designated as Organ Donation Day.

The two day campaign organised at the college included an awareness walk and a seminar addressed by experts in the field.

On day one; more than 1,500 students took a walk around the campus holding placards and banners educating people about the importance of donating organs. Dr. Shashi Nijhawan, Principal, Shivaji College along with college teachers and staff members walked more than two kilometres talking to people about the campaign and asking them to pledge their organs.

On day two; the college organized an awareness seminar on organ donation on campus. It was organised in collaboration with MOHAN Foundation, Delhi-NCR. Two speakers addressed the gathering: Dr Ravi Mohanka, Senior Liver Transplant Surgeon, Medanta-the Medicity, Gurgaon spoke about organ transplantation and Dr. Muneet Sahi, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation, Delhi-NCR spoke about organ donation. In her session she highlighted the basic concepts about organ donation and guided the audience about how to pledge their organs.

More than 350 students and teachers pledged to donate their organs. Many students carried organ donation forms back home to convince their family members to join the cause.
