  • On August 13, 2016, MOHAN Foundation in association with Medanta-The Medicity, Indian Medical Association (IMA) & Association of Physicians of India (API), Gurgaon chapter conducted a CME on “Organ Transplantation: Current scenario in India followed by the “Pledge to Donate” event by Doctors at Optus Sarovar Premiere Hotel in Gurgaon. The CME & event was preceded by a press conference, a day before on August 12, 2016 in the Lab Conference room at Medanta-The Medicity.

The initiative was undertaken to create awareness about organ donation amongst the medical fraternity in Gurgaon as the doctors have a key role to play in the organ donation process. Promoting organ donation serves both patients who need transplants as well as the society by decreasing the financial and human costs of many life-threatening conditions.

The CME began with a welcome address by Dr. Anil Hans (President, IMA, Gurgaon) followed by legal perspective on organ donation & transplantation by Dr. Ashok Taneja (Member, Human Organs Transplantation Board, Govt. of Haryana). Dr. A. S. Soin (Chairman, Institute of Liver Transplantation & Regenerative Medicine, Medanta-The Medicity) gave an overview on organ donation and transplantation.

The highlight of the CME was the panel discussion that had Dr. A. S. Soin, Dr. Anil Bhan (Vice Chairman, Division of Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery, Medanta-The Medicity), Dr. Traiq Ali (Associate Director, Critical Care, Medanta-The Medicity), Dr. Ramesh Dhankar (Civil Surgeon, Civil Hospital, Gurgaon), Dr. S. C. Baluja (President, API, Gurgaon), Ms. Pallavi Kumar (Executive Director, MOHAN Foundation, Delhi-NCR) and Dr. Anil Hans as the panelists. Dr. Ashok Taneja was the moderator.

All the panelists were unanimous on the critical need to implement the program across all hospitals in the state of Haryana involved in transplant activity, to make it a societal program, to sensitise not only the public but also the medical professionals, to identify local champions in the hospital who would take forward this program and creation of a dedicated team with support and commitment from the top management.

Sharing from liver and heart recipients followed the panel discussion. The CME came to a close with the “pledging to donate” event that had all the panelists signing the donor cards.

In the light of the many queries from the audience, it was decided to organize a standalone workshop on brain death for the doctors.
