Three-way Kidney Transplant Swap Helps Wife Get Kidney

March 9, 2010

Andrew Mullen was a willing kidney donor for his wife, who needed a transplant to survive. However they were not matched. Mullen got around this issue by taking part in a kidney pool and donating his organ to another patients who matched with his blood type in exchange for a kidney for his wife.

"It is the best present I've ever been given," Mullen's wife Andrea said. "Before, I was so ill and I didn't have a life. Everything revolved around dialysis. Now, I'm feeling better than I have done for years and it's all thanks to Andrew." Andrew and Andrea are the first couple to be involved in a three-way swap in Scotland.

Teemir Thakrar and his wife Linsey, from Hertfordshire, and Chris Brent from Bexleyheath, Kent, and his sister Lisa Burton were the other participants in this unique surgery.

Andrew and Andrea have almost recovered and are back to routine work.
