Corporal Matthew Millington of the Queen's Royal Lancers succumbed after a hospital transplant that somehow managed to give him the lungs of a heavy smoker.

Millington was stationed in Iraq in 2005 and was told he would die unless he received a lung transplant. He was diagnosed with an incurable disease that made it very difficult for him to breathe.

Millington had his transplant at the Papworth hospital, in Cambridge in 2007, but died in 2008 after doctors found a tumor in one of the lungs.

"The hospital did everything OK. There were some things they said they would tighten up on, but they didn't do anything wrong," Millington's father, Lester, told the Stoke Sentinel. "We wish he could have lived longer, but we've got nothing to say against the hospital. They were as devastated as we were when they found out Matthew had an inoperable tumour."
