New Zealand pushing for changing Organ donation rules ?

February 24, 2006
  • In view of the organ shortages in New Zealand, there is a proposal to change the organ donor rules. New Zealand is considering allowing harvesting of organs from patients who are irreversibly brain-damaged, but not yet brain-dead.
The reason for this proposal is that New Zealand recorded one of the lowest donation rates in a decade. This move is aimed at increasing the donor pool But may result in a long drawn debate. Some of the provisions may be a potential minefield, both ethical and medical. One such proposal put forth is, organ harvest from non-heart-beating donors as opposed to brain-dead donors
Moreover, according to the current law, family members of the potential donor can overturn the decision of the wish of the potential donor . Event though the donors express their wish through the driver’s licence, if for some reason the relatives can revoke the decision.According to the proposal the wish is to be made enforceable once the wish of the individual taking the driver’s licence wishes to donate organs that should be considered full, final and only requirement for retrieval .In this way the donor’s’ wish can be fulfilled
