A nonprofit organization has set up a kidney registry which attempts to do away with delays caused due to mismatched blood groups.
The Apex Swap Transplant Registry (ASTR) has been commissioned by the Apex Kidney Foundation and will be made up of details of people who are in dire need of a kidney.
A successful transplantation in two such pairs of kidney donor-recipients is possible if the kidney of one donor matches that of the recipient of the other pair or vice-versa.
Speaking on the register, ASTR coordinator, Dr Vishwanth Billa said, “This is the first time in India that an initiative has been taken to start a swap transplant registry to curtail the waiting period for patients. The facility is provided free of cost.”
