Transplant Coordinators' Training Programme
Impact of Our Work
On June 30, 2018, MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness talk on organ donation for the teachers and staff of Ashok Memorial Public School, Faridabad, Haryana. Ms. Nupur Mathur (Counsellor, AMPS) organised the session and Ms. Anindita Sabath (Transplant Coordinator, MF Delhi-NCR) coordinated it. Dr. Muneet Kaur Sahi (Programme Manager, MF Delhi-NCR) was the resource person.
Ashok Memorial Public School was established to keep alive and afresh the memory of Late. Ashok Sachdeva, S/O Late Girdhari Lal Sachdeva, who left for his heavenly abode in the prime age of his life. As he took keen interest in supporting the under privileged and rural youth, this school was established to continue his great legacy.
Dr. Muneet Kaur Sahi, Ms. Anindita Sabath and Mrs. Mamta Singh (Principal, AMPS) lit the lamp and inaugurated the event. Ms. Mathur then introduced MOHAN Foundation and the spokesperson to the participants.
Dr. Muneet began the session by asking a few introductory questions to the participants to gauge their knowledge about the topic. It was surprising to know that three teachers amongst the group narrated their personal experience regarding the need of organs with the group. One of them was suffering from Chronic Kidney Disease and was undergoing dialysis twice a week. The other two shared the need for kidney and bone marrow for their extended family members. Ms Nupur Mathur (Counsellor, AMPS) shared that she had signed up for organ donation with MOHAN Foundation and her brother who is suffering from Marfan’s Syndrome wished to donate his organs and body upon his death. Another teacher told the audience that one of her family members had donated her whole body upon death.
These experience-sharing set the tone for the session and Dr Muneet explained the huge gap between the demand and supply of organs. She provided an in-depth understanding of the concept of brain-death, who can donate organs, when can organs be donated and what all organs and tissues can be donated after death. She also gave a brief idea about the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994 and tried to give clarity on the myths and misconceptions around organ donation with their corresponding reality checks.
There was a very positive response from the participants as they actively responded to the questions put up by Dr. Muneet and were engaged in a reciprocal discussion.
In the end, Ms. Pratima Oberoi (Vice Principal, AMPS) gave the vote of thanks. Ms. Mamta Singh and Ms. Nupur Mathur thanked the MF representatives for conducting a session that was very useful and informative. Both the principal and the counsellor showed keenness to organize the Angels of Change Volunteer Training programme for their students from classes 9-12 and said that the counsellor would take this conversation forward in the near future.
Close to 107 teachers and staff attended the session and equal number of Form-7 were picked up.
