The number of organ donors in Scotland has risen by more than a fifth in just four and a half years. New data presented in the UK parliament revealed that some 2.25m Scots were on the National Health Service (NHS) Organ Donor Register as of this month.

This is a big positive increase of 391,259, or 21.1%, on the 1.86m organ donors who were on the register at the end of March 2011.

It means that more than four in ten Scots have declared willing to donate. Across the UK, the number of people on the register increased to 21.9m from 17.8m in 2011.

People can now join the NHS Organ Donor Register online and the procedure takes no more than two minutes.

The government also made the registration easy for the people as they can join the initiative when registering for a driving licence or even when you apply for a Boots Advantage card. The register is entirely confidential.

In the event of the death of an organ donor, his/her family or friends will be asked to confirm that they did not change their mind before any organs are taken.
