Ripon Medical Center is organizing an organ donation awareness programme to feature the importance of being a registered donor.

The center will conduct a flag raising ceremony featuring a Donate Life flag that will be placed on the hospital’s flag pole on April 13 to celebrate survivors, donors and the gift of life.

The ceremony begins at noon outside the hospital’s main entrance at 845 Parkside Street in Ripon. The actual flag raising will take place around 12:25 p.m. David Olson, a Ripon resident and organ donor, will share the story of his personal experience with organ donation on the occasion. Katherine Vergos, Ripon Medical Center chief operating officer, will also be present.

“It’s important that we continually work to raise awareness about the importance of organ donations. We know this makes a difference in the lives of those more than 120,000 men, women and children waiting for a lifesaving transplant today,” Vergos said.

While medical advances now enable more than 28,000 Americans per year to receive organ transplants that save or enhance their lives, not enough organs are available to help everyone in need. More than one million tissue transplants are done each year, and the surgical need for tissue has been steadily rising.
