The kidneys and corneas of 52-year-old K. Ponnuthai were harvested at Meenakshi Mission Hospital for transplantation after she was declared brain-dead.

She collapsed in her place and had asthma and high blood pressure. She was admitted in the hospital and was on ventilator support. Doctors found that blood supply to her brain had stopped due to irreversible brain stem death but her kidneys and eyes were normal.

Her husband and family members were counselled to donate the kidneys and eyes of the brain-dead patient, which will save the lives of patients with advanced kidney and eye failure.

After the family gave consent, the permission for organ harvesting was obtained without delay. The harvested kidneys were transplanted to two different patients undergoing treatment in the hospital while the corneas were donated to the eye bank of Aravind Eye Hospital.
