Blood Donation is the most priceless gift

  • The Australian Red Cross Blood service as urged the Government staff and private employees to donate blood. The Corporate Donor Program which has been launched under the Co-ordination of Michael Sands has urged the Government departments as well as Private companies to donate blood. Program co-coordinator has asked the employers of private organization to encourage their employees to donate blood. The Program coordinator as agreed to organize shuttle bus service between their office and blood donation bank and this program will provide a free health checkup apart from blood testing which involves testing for HIV, Hepatitis Virus, Treponema bacteria, West Nile Virus and other blood transmitting diseases.

    It is estimated that 1 pint of donated blood can help five people by separating the blood into Red blood cells, Platelets and Plasma. Blood can be stored for 42 days in a refrigerator. Blood donation can be given by a person who is above 16 years of age and have good general health condition.

    Precautions to be taken after a blood donation:

    • Avoid Alcohol for the rest of the day

    • Drink more liquids

    • Don’t smoke for at least 1 hour after blood donation

    • If bleeding continues form the arm keep your arm raises and apply pressure to the area

    • Resume normal activity after 30 minutes

    • Avoid heavy work for the rest of the day

    • Have a good heavy meal.

    • Remove bandage only after 24 hours.
