Spreading the Concept of Organ Donation at Thiruthani, Tamilnadu

  • A rural camp was organized by the social work students of St. Joseph’s College of Arts & Science, Chennai on 3rd October 2011 followed by the invitation of the MOHAN Foundation team members to attend the function.

     

    As a part of one day cultural activity in the rural camp organized by them, the concept of “organ donation” was clearly explained. This was presented to them in Tamil by the Transplant Coordinators Mr. Prakash and Mr. Ruban and this was the highlight of the programme.

     

    More than 200 people from the neighboring villages actively participated in the programme.  Mr. Prakash started the presentation with an awareness song which attracted the people. The concepts on brain death, organ donation, difference between organ donation and other donations, procedure for eye donations and whole body donations and the difference between live donation and cadaver donation was put forth to the people and explained to them.

     

    Videos on organ donation were screened enabling them to understand the concept and importance of organ donation. Many of them were really surprised with the work being done in this area. The statistics on organ donation in Tamilnadu, the THO Act was also explained to them.

     

    The importance of donor cards was explained and more than 200 people signed the donor cards at the end of the programme. The villagers also promised that they would spread this concept of organ donation to all the people in the neighbourhood.
