Organ Donation Awareness Talk for the Nursing Staff of Deepam Hospitals, Chennai

  • On 3rd March 2012, MOHAN Foundation’s Transplant Coordinator Ms. Sindhuja visited Deepam Hospitals to give an Awareness Talk on Organ Donation to the nursing students of the hospital. The Foundation was invited to do the talk by the Social Work Trainees of S.D.N.B Vaishnav College placed at Deepam Hospitals, Pallavaram. The main objective of the programme was to create a sense of solidarity towards the cause of Organ Donation to the nurses who played a major role in Donor Maintenance and Organ Transplant.

     

    Topics that were covered in the talk were:

    • About MOHAN Foundation
    • Concepts of Organ Donation
    • Details of Eye Donation Concepts
    • What is Solid Organ Donation?
    • The difference between Brain Death & Coma
    • Role of Nurses
    • Q & A Session

     

    The nurses showed great interest throughout the talk and raised many questions related to Organ Donation. A few questions that were raised:

     

    1. How can one donate organs if they are not from the city and death occurs in a rural area?

    2. Can a person living with HIV/AIDS donate his/her organs?

    3. What should one do if there is a brain death in the hospital?

     

    2 nurses concluded the session with a recap of what was spoken. A small introduction to the "Diploma in Transplant Coordinators & Grief Counselling” course offered by MOHAN Foundation – IGNOU Community College was also given to the nurses.

    MOHAN Foundation Brochures and Donor Cards were distributed to all the 50 participants who were willing to pledge for Organ Donation.
