  • A talk on organ donation was organized by the Nagpur Chapter of Institute of Company Secretaries of India on 15th June 2016, being Practising Company Secretaries day, at the Vidarbha Hindi Sammelan Hall at Jhansi Rani square, Sitabuldi, Nagpur. The Chapter Committee of ICSI strives to conduct programs for development of students and members. Organ donation awareness talk was held for the same reason, initiated by CS. Rohit Jain, a committee member of the Chapter.

At the outset CS Rohit Jain welcomed all Members & Students and CS Akshay Paranjape introduced the key note speaker Dr. Ravi Wankhede to the audience. Chapter Chairman, CS Tushar Pahade welcomed the speaker. Dr. Wankhede gave a PPP and covered the ambit of the subject of transplant of human organs and tissue including historical & social, law governing transplant, the huge need for organs, religious interpretation, the Indian scenario as compared to the world, etc.

Dr. Wankhede explained the brain death, a condition from wherein several organs and tissues could be harvested and transplanted to the needy. He gave an example of the requirement of about two lakh kidneys every year in the country, due to Diabetes Mellitus and unhealthy life styles amongst Indians. Dr. Wankhede informed that just about 6,000 lucky people are able to get a transplant and that too 90% donations come from living relatives and some unrelated donors. He said in the developed countries the ratio is reversed i.e. 90% organs are from brain dead people and 10% organs are from living donors. He lamented that due to ignorance of the subject, religious dogmas & less social inclination prevent people to come forward to donate even eyes. He said this has to change with all round development. He gave example of Tamil Nadu State which has carved a name in India with about ten times organ donation as compared to the National average.

In the end Dr. Wankhede asked the participants to sign a pledge to donate organs and also help spread the awareness of the subject in the families and friend circles through Facebook and other medium. Vote of thanks was proposed by CS Rohit Jain. Dr. Ravi Wankhede was presented with a memento by Mrs. Nilima Harode a well known social worker & an educationist.
