Organ Donation Awareness Speech at Puducherry Government Law College

  • On 18th November, 2013, Dr. Ambedkar Govt. Law College invited MOHAN Foundation Puducherry, to conduct an awareness session on organ donation.

     

    The session started with a welcome speech by Dr.Vani, Principal, Dr. Ambedkar Govt. Law College, Mr. Praveen Tirupathi PPS (North Puducherry) & Mr. Kalyanasundran MLA, Ex Transport Minister at Government of Puducherry   gave an introduction to organ donation. It was followed by the presentation given by Mr. Ananth R, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation & PIMS Hospital.

     

    The main topics discussed during the programme were:

    • Types of Organ Donation - Live and Deceased Donation
    • Brain Death - how it is different from natural death and coma
    • Organs that can be donated after brain death and natural death
    • Transplantation of Human Organs Act 1994 and Rules related to declaration of brain death
    • Introduction to the diagnosis and maintenance of a brain dead organ donor
    • Activities of MOHAN Foundation across the country to strengthen the Deceased Organ Donation programme

     

    The following questions were raised by the Media & Law college students’

    1. Can a person who committed suicide become an Organ Donor?
    2.  Can a person who died of snake bite become a potential donor?
    3. How to register kidney failure patient?
    4. Who is allocating each organ (brain death case) at Puducherry?
    5. How to register  for eye donation?

    More than 153 students and 8 faculty members from the college and 12 members from the media  attended the programme. Every member of the audience picked up a donor card.
