2nd Hemalatha Memorial Lecture at School of Nursing on Organ Donation

  • On 21st January 2016 MOHAN Foundation and TRANSTAN organised an organ donation awareness talk for the students of School Of Nursing, Madras Medical College Chennai, as a tribute to Ms. Hemalatha Tutor & Ex. Staff Nurse Government General Hospital. The objective of the event was to motivate the young nurses to promote the cause.

    The program began with a welcome address by Mr. Prakash Transplant Coordinator. This was followed by a fun and innovative ice breaker for the students. Then Mr. Sreekumar, Project Manager, TRANSTAN explained about their work in Tamil Nadu.

    Dr. R. Krishnamoorthy a renowned Plastic Surgeon in SIMS hospital, Chennai gave the Hemalatha Memorial  Lecture. He spoke of how Mrs. Hemalatha was self motivated on increasing the number of cornea donation in the Intensive Medical Care Unit at her hospital  made eye donation a part of her duty.  In December 2014 we lost this champion and every year since then a Lecture is organized in her memory for nursing students.

    He then elaborated on the concept of organ  and tissue donation and also explained about the Early Identification of the potential donor, difference between cardiac arrest and brain death, cause of brain death, stages of grief and role of nurses in the concept of organ donation. In memory of 2nd Hemalatha Lecture a “Neem” plant was handed over to the Tutor to be planted in the campus.

    Mr. Prakash Transplant Coordinator conducted a Quiz as a warm up for the students to participate in the competition and various competitions were organized like slogan, poetry writing, poster designing and on spot speech. The students eagerly participated in these events. Ms.Sunitha & Ms.Gieetha Transplant Coordinators coordinated competitions. Dr.Hemal MOHAN Foundation Ms. Anjana & Ms. Sangari Cadaver Transplant Programme and Mrs. Rani Ravindran of University Women’s Association judged the Best Posters, Slogan and On-spot speech and these awards were given to the students.  

     The Vote of thanks was given by Mr. Prakash for the support given by the management and students for making this event a great success. Totally 96 student and 2 staff participated in the programme. The participation certificate and refreshments were distributed to the students.
