On February 12, 2024, the MOHAN Foundation Delhi NCR office was invited to conduct an organ donation awareness session during the CNE workshop at Lady Hardinge Medical College Hospital, Connaught Place. Ms. Simran Anand, Programme Officer at MOHAN Foundation (MF) Delhi NCR, was the speaker for the session, attended by senior nurses.

 

Previously, the session on organ donation was held during the CNE workshop for senior nursing officers in January 2024. Ms. Rashmi Gaur, CNE Coordinator of Kalawati Saran Children Hospital, is a passionate advocate of the cause of organ donation. She coordinated with the MF team in Delhi to organize a session again during their one-week CNE workshop.

 

Ms. Simran Anand began the session by asking participants what they knew about organ donation. She then explained the current status of organ donation in India, covering the following topics in detail:

 

What is organ donation and why is it important to donate organs?

Who can be an organ donor?

Explanation about live and deceased donors

Organs that can be donated during life and after death

Brain death

Eye donation and steps required to preserve corneas after death.

What an individual can do to contribute to this noble cause

Myths and facts about organ donation

Differences between coma and brain death

 

In response to a participant's question regarding uterus transplantation, Ms. Anand also discussed the first successful case of uterus transplantation, which occurred in Maharashtra.

 

One of the participants inquired about how she can enroll as a volunteer with MF.

 

Overall, the session was very interactive, with participants enthusiastically contributing to the discussion and asking many queries, including:

 

• If the patient is suffering from hypertension or diabetes, can he/she donate his/her organs?

• How is skin retrieved and stored?

• Is there an allotted time within which organs and tissues have to be retrieved and stored?

• Is the uterus transplant also performed in India?
