CME on “Brain Death and Deceased Organ Transplantation”, Mumbai

MOHAN Foundation and Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), Mumbai in association with Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM), Mumbai and Sanofi, India organized a Continuing Medical Education (CME) on “Brain Death and Deceased Organ Transplantation”. The CME was held on 20th July, 2013 at Lilavathi Hospital & Research Centre, Bandra, Mumbai. A group of 60 Intensivists, Critical Care Physicians, Neurologists, Transplant Surgeons and Transplant Coordinators from various hospitals in Maharashtra participated in the CME.

 

The programme started with the introduction to ZTCC and current status of deceased organ donation in Mumbai presented by Dr. Sanjay Nagral, Joint Secretary, ZTCC. Following that; Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director, MOHAN Foundation presented an overview of deceased organ donation programme in India.

 

Mrs. Sujatha Niranjan, Manager Information Systems, MOHAN Foundation, Chennai spoke about: “Identifying a deceased organ donor and approaching the families for organ donation”. Dr. Rahul Pandit, Secretary, ISCCM, Mumbai handled the session on “Diagnosis of brain death:  Pitfalls and Problems”.

Maintenance of brain dead patients who are potential organ donors always remains a challenge. In such a situation the intensivists/critical care physicians/anaesthetists play a crucial role. As an Intensivist, Dr. Shruti Tandaon from Global Hospitals, Mumbai shared her views on “Issues in the maintenance of deceased organ donors”. Followed which; Dr. Rakesh Rai, Liver Transplant Surgeon, Fortis Hospitals, Mumbai, elucidated on “What the transplant surgeon expects from the Intensivists”.

 

The programme continued with a panel discussion which covered the following points:

  • Hypernatremia and Diabetes Insipidus in case of Deceased Donors
  • Sepsis in deceased donors
  • Problems during apnoea testing
  • Family refuses consent and asks for disconnection of ventilation

 

The Panel Members included - Dr. Sunil Pandya, Dr. M.S. Kamath, Dr. D. Karnad,  Dr. Anuj Clerk, Dr. Parash Jaindhani and Dr. Sanjith.

 

The programme concluded with a note on “Way forward…” given by Dr. S. K. Mathur, Vice-President, ZTCC.
