Making the Ask for Organ Donation, a talk for Hospital Staff of AVBRH (Acharya Vinoba Bhave Rural Hospital), Wardha, Nagpur

On 6th July, Ms. Jaya Jairam, Project Director and Dr. Hemal Kanvinde, Quality Assurance Officer were invited to conduct a session at Acharya Vinoba Bhave Rural Hospital on "Making the Ask for Organ Donation". The session was presided by Dr. Chandrasekhar Mahakalkar, CMS, AVBRH and was attended by assistant professors and residents, Dept. of Nephrology, staff nurses, OT, administrative officers, Transplant Coordinators and lab managers from various departments of AVBRH. The presentation effectively demonstrated the nuanced skills required to handle a sensitive situation such as counselling a ‘brain dead’ patient's family through their tremendous grief, for organ donation. The various stages of grief, their manifestations and the best way to help the emotionally distressed families to cope with such a situation, were discussed. The role of the transplant coordinator or "grief counselor" was discussed.  The session was well appreciated and made a deep impact in the minds of all attendees. The session was concluded with the felicitation of the dignitaries by Dr. Mahakalkar. 35 staff members attended the session.
