Successful Completion of the Online 'Transplant Coordination Professional Certificate' Course - May 1, 2023 - June 10, 2023

An online course on Transplant Coordination Professional Certificate (TCPC) was conducted by MOHAN Foundation between May 1, 2023 and June 10, 2023. A total of 57 participants including fifty-six from India and one from Nepal enrolled for this six-week structured programme. The online course consisted e-modules, assignments, webinars and examination. The registered participants were given access to the resource materials hosted on our e-learning platform https://el.mohanfoundation.org/.

 

The e-modules covered various aspects of organ donation and transplantation. In addition, a series of webinars were conducted over the weekends which presented participants opportunities to connect with experts from the field and clarify their queries.  

 

The weekend webinars covered a wide range of topics including:

  • Basic concept of organ donation and transplantation: Participants learned about different types of organ donors, brainstem death, transplantation types, rejection, opt-in and opt-out systems, and the family's role in organ donation.

 

  • Transplantation of Human Organs Act: The session covered important aspects of the law and the mandated legal documents to facilitate organ donation and transplantation in hospitals.

 

  • Brainstem death - Concept, Identification, Certification: Participants were explained the clinical and legal aspects surrounding determination of death by neurological criteria which enhanced their understanding of brainstem death.

 

  • Living donor transplant - Role of a transplant coordinator: The session aimed to address the role of a transplant coordinator in facilitating living donor transplants. The session covered recipient workup, counselling the potential living donor and recipient, documentation, approval for living donor transplants. Additionally, the webinar also addressed subjects like post-transplant follow-up and the financial aspects associated with transplantation.

 

  • Challenging case studies: Participants were presented with challenging case studies related to deceased donation and approaching families for organ donation.

 

  • Ethical considerations in organ donation: The session discussed the elements of medical ethics such as beneficence, non-maleficence, transference, justice, confidentiality, and autonomy in the context of organ donation. Participants were also presented with case studies and asked to apply ethical principles to each scenario.

 

  • Deceased donation coordination - Role of a transplant coordinator: Participants were explained the steps involved in the deceased donation process, forming a brain stem death committee in the hospital, supporting the donor families, coordinating with state organ distribution body and recipient teams as well as conducting educational programs for hospital employees. The session also addressed the procedure for organ donation in a medico-legal case and challenging case studies that have been encountered.

Online polls and quizzes conducted during the webinars helped achieving active participation and engagement with the participants. An online examination was conducted towards the end of the course duration. 50 (out of 57) candidates received their certificate after the successful completion of course requirements.
