Webinar on Mental Health - Before and After Transplant

On 17th June 2023, an online webinar on topic 'Mental Health - Before and After Transplant’ was conducted for our patient community at TRIOMPH. The program was attended by the organ recipients, donors, caregivers, patients on dialysis, transplant coordinators as well as the staff of MOHAN Foundation.

The session was conducted by the esteemed panellists from MindSmith, Dr Satyen Sharma, a Senior Consulting Psychiatrist & the founding director along with Ms. Sindhu Wadhwa, Head of Therapy at the MindSmith & a renowned Psychotherapist with over 14 years of experience. The webinar aimed to raise awareness about the mental health challenges surrounding organ transplantation, validating and supporting the participant’s emotions.

The session started with Ms Jaya Jairam introducing the panel & explaining about TRIOMPH.

Ms. Sindhu Wadhwa shed light on the emotional journey experienced by people during the transplant process. The participants shared their struggles with existential questioning "Why me?", survival guilt, the pressure to meet society’s expectations, feelings of isolation, social stigma, surgery-related stressors, the risk of organ rejection & financial dependency.

Dr Satyen Sharma emphasized on recognizing early signs of depression in oneself and others. Symptoms such as loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities, feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, helplessness, changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, social isolation, fixation & detachment from reality were addressed by the experts. 40 participants were present.

Furthermore, mindful exercises were shared to promote coping mechanisms & self-care practices. The session concluded with a vote of thanks from Ms. Jaya Jairam.
