Awareness campaign on organ donation conducted at Shija Academy of Nursing, Langol, Manipur.

At Shija Hospital & Research Institute (SHRI) Pvt. Ltd., Langol, on March 25, 2023, the MOHAN Foundation started a campaign to raise awareness about organ donation. The first session of the campaign was held in the Shija Academy of Nursing, Langol, auditorium. Ms. Laishram Monica Devi, Programme Officer, MOHAN Foundation, was the speaker, and Ms. Thoidingjam Udayini Khuman, Transplant Coordinator, MOHAN Foundation, accompanied her.

 

The session was coordinated by Mr. Rajesh Moirangthem, Transplant Coordinator, SHRI. The participants were the faculties of the institute and the nursing students of the academy.

 

Ms. Monica began the session by assessing the students’ perceptions and understandings about organ donation and transplantation. She started her presentation by introducing the MOHAN Foundation, its objectives, and its visions. Following which, the basic concepts of organ donation and transplantation were explained with the help of a PowerPoint presentation.

 

Points explained in detail:

• Organ donation and its need in society

• Transplant waiting list in India

• laws enacted for transplantation.

• National Organ Transplant Programme (NOTP).

• Facts and myths about organ donation

• Deceased donor and the correlation with brain death

• The importance of the donor card

• The importance of family consent in the process of organ donation

 

Later, the students were informed about the development of the kidney transplant programme at the government hospital as well as in the private hospital, making them aware of the fact that things were looking up in the state of Manipur. They were also sensitised to the ever-growing need for organ transplants due to the rise of end-stage organ failures.

 

Thereafter, a one-on-one session was done with the participants, where they were briefed on their perceptions of organ donation. Later, Mr. Rajesh updated the status of the living donor kidney transplant and corneal transplant done at SHRI.

 

At the end of the session, the participants extended their gratitude to MOHAN Foundation team for conducting the session.

 

Close to 90 participants attended the session and 36 of them pledged for organ donation.
