Cadaveric Organ Retrieval: Towards A Consensus on Best Surgical Practices, New Delhi

A first-of-its-kind workshop on “Cadaveric Organ Retrieval – Towards a Consensus on Best Surgical Practices cum Operative Workshop on Kidney Transplantation” was jointly organized by Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and supported by MOHAN Foundation on the May 11, 2013  at the symposium hall of NSC complex PUSA institute.

 

There are many forums and conferences where various issues regarding deceased organ transplantation are addressed, but there has been no symposium on developing a consensus on best surgical practices in deceased organ retrieval. The workshop aimed to bridge this gap.

 

The conglomeration included experts in the fields of Anaesthetic management, Heart and Lung retrieval specialists, Liver and Kidney Transplant surgeons and experts for Corneal retrieval from all across India. Highly interactive sessions were chaired by Dr B K Rao, Dr Anil Aggarwal, Dr Sunil Shroff , Dr Ganesh Gopal Krishnan amongst others and some of the finest transplant surgeons spoke on various aspects of cadaveric organ retrieval.

 

The talks included subjects such as management of brain dead deceased donor in ICU, IT anaesthetic management, surgical preparation for organ harvesting, organ retrieval ( heart, lung, liver, intestine, pancreas, kidneys, corneas). Dr Sunil Shroff made an elaborate presentation on Inter hospital coordination during cadaveric multi organ retrieval.

 

Dr Jagdish Prasad, Director General, DGHS was invited to inaugurate the workshop. He was also handed over the draft guidelines for coming up with a consensus on best surgical practices on cadaveric organ retrieval.

 

About 60 surgeons attended the workshop from various parts of the country.
