Awareness Session on Organ Donation conducted at St. Joseph’s Degree and PG College, Hyderabad

On September 13,2022 MOHAN Foundation conducted an awareness session on organ donation for Journalism, Mass Communication and Psychology students of the college. The session was organised by Ms. Srividya Subramanian, Project Manager at MOHAN Foundation in coordination with Mr. Glen De Silva who is the HOD and Assistant Professor of the college. Dr. Bhanu Prakash and Ms. Srividya. S were the key resource.

 

St Joseph’s College is a premiere affiliate of the Osmania University, it is an Autonomous College, Re-accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council with ‘B++’ Grade for its Distinctive Educational Environment, Human Values and Social Commitment. The College is known to have eminent collaborators from academia and industry with qualified and enthusiastic teaching and non-teaching staff and vibrant student fraternity.

 

Dr. Bhanu Prakash started the session by asking a few introductory questions on Organ Donation and then introduced MOHAN Foundation to the participants and kept the audience engaged throughout the session. The following were discussed in detail:

  • Organ donation and its need in the society
  • When and how does organ donation take place
  • Organs that can be donated during life and after death
  • Transplant waiting list in India
  • Brain death
  • Difference between brain death and coma
  • Role of MOHAN Foundation
  • Eye donation

 

Ms. Srividya.S spoke about the future of Organ Donation in India and gave a detailed session on grief counselling and asked a few interesting questions to the participants and also explained the importance of family consent in Organ Donation.

Over all the session was very interactive where participants enthusiastically contributed to the discussion and asked many queries. To name a few: 

  • Organ Donation registries
  • Kidney scandals
  • Role of digital media in promoting Organ donation
  • Opt-out or Presumed consent for Organ donation
  • What are the contraindications for Organ donation
  • Role of family consent for Organ donation
  • Tracking of people who pledge to donate organs

 

The queries were addressed and resolved by Dr. Prakash and Srividya.S who also motivated the students to pledge for organ donation and explained the importance of a donor card.

Close to 100 brochures and donor cards were distributed at the end of the session out of which 90 students pledged to donate organs
