Awareness Session on Organ Donation Conducted for the Students of the NorthCap University, Gurugram

On August 31, 2022, MOHAN Foundation was invited to conduct an awareness session on organ donation for the first-year students pursuing bachelor’s in management, Law and Engineering in NorthCap University (NCU), Gurugram. Ms. Pallavi Kumar (Executive Director) was the resource person and Ms. Simran Anand (Program Officer) accompanied her. The session was coordinated by Dr. Shrutimita Mehta, Deputy Dean (Students)

 

The NorthCap University (NCU), formerly ITM University is a multidisciplinary private university founded in 1996 in Gurugram by Educate India Society. NCU conducts degree programs in Engineering, Applied Sciences, Management, Liberal Arts, and Law.

 

Ms. Pallavi was welcomed by the students and faculty members. She began the session by sharing a donor family and a heart recipient testimonial and how transplantation gave him a second chance to live. She began with asking student’s their understanding of organ donation and then moved on to explain the concepts of organ donation and transplantation with the help of a PowerPoint presentation and a short film on brain death. The following aspects of organ donation were covered: 

  • Organ donation and its need in the society
  • When and how does organ donation take place
  • Organs that can be donated during life and after death
  • Transplant waiting list in India
  • Brain death
  • Difference between brain death and coma
  • Role of MOHAN Foundation
  • Myths and facts about organ donation
  • Eye donation
  • Family consent

 

When asked, 6 students shared their own experiences of organ failure and transplantation with very close family members. This clearly established the strong need for organ donation.

 

One of the students shared about his mother’s condition who is suffering from kidney failure and undergoing dialysis past six months, awaiting a kidney transplant. A student also shared that her grandmothers’ corneas were donated.

 

Overall, the session was very interactive where participants enthusiastically contributed to the discussion and asked many queries.

 

At the end of the session, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Nupur Prakash expressed her gratitude to the MF team for conducting the session. The faculty also expressed an interest in their students volunteering/interning with the Foundation.
