Awareness program at MMM College of Health Sciences, Chennai

On June 4, 2022, awareness session was held for students of MMM college of Health Sciences. It was a part of the college assembly  and around 30 students from the streams of Cardiac Prefusion and Medical Sociology and theirfaculty  joined the session. Ms Preetha Baskar, Project Executive and Mr Shanth Ragul, Project Executive, Education from MOHAN Foundation conducted the sessions. They were accompanied by interns from MMM college.

 

Students  of the Medical Sociology  Department organized the assembly and students gave  a talk on special events that happened in  June. MOHAN Foundation then started the awareness on Organ Donation. . 

 

Ms Preetha Baskar thanked the college management and commenced the session by asking about blood donation. She elaborated on the concept of organ donation by explaining the importance of organ donation, the need for organs, when and how donation can happen. She explained brain death and its difference from coma. She also emphasized the need to speak to the family about donor pledge and donor card.  Two interesting stories were narrated to the students. A video explaining brain stem death was screened to ensure that the students have greater clarity on its concepts.. A kidney recipient’s video was screened to show the struggles faced by a kidney failure patient and the joy and hope post transplant.

 

Mr Ragul gave a glimpse of the courses offered by MOHAN foundation. He spoke of the importance of a trained transplant coordinator.  He  threw light on the need for organ donation by giving an example of 2005 Tsunami in Chennai.

 

Since it was a college assembly, students made a few presentations which were really knowledgeable. The college assembly ended with the national anthem and a group picture with the students and faculty.
