Organ donation talk to nurses of RML Hospital, New Delhi

Continuing Nursing Education Cell (CNE) of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital organized a two-day workshop on emerging trends in critical care nursing. MOHAN Foundation was invited to take a session on organ donation and transplantation on January 10, 2013.


The session, attended by 52 nurses from the hospital, focused on brain death, its causes and diagnosis, organ/tissue donation, THO act and transplant scenario in India. Since the CME was organized to discuss the emerging trends in critical care nursing, special emphasis was given to the role of critical care nurses in the deceased organ donor program. 

 

They play a key role in organ donation. They have a unique opportunity to care for both the dying patient and the patient's family. This experience gives them the chance to impact up to eight other lives through the gift of organ donation. The talk also stressed on how they should learn to recognize and identify potential organ donors as early as possible in the course of treatment. Special mention was given to the fact that how through careful assessment a nurse monitors for signs of brain death and institute's donor management protocols.


Post the presentation an interesting discussion followed with nurses sharing their experiences and taking organ donor cards (8) and "Gift a Life" fliers.
