Patient Education Workshop on ‘Kidney Transplant - A Gift of Life’ for Dialysis Patients in Tamil - TRIOMPH & NephroPlus Initiative

On 14th September 2021, TRIOMPH (Transplant Recipients of India and Organ failure patients - a Movement to Provide Hope), a Patient Support Group launched by MOHAN Foundation in association with NephroPlus organised a Tamil workshop, third in the series, Kidney Transplant workshop for the dialysis patients, caregivers & dialysis technicians of NephroPlus dialysis centres in Chennai.

This was a unique and interactive workshop aimed to provide information on kidney health and how people affected by kidney failure could prepare themselves for transplant.

Ms. Sujatha Suriyamoorthi, Associate Director – Courses, MOHAN Foundation was invited as guest speaker for the workshop. She discussed about the general challenges that the end-stage renal disease patients undergo in their daily lives and gave an insight into how a patient on dialysis can opt for kidney transplant leading better quality of life.

She then showed estimated comparison of dialysis cost verses kidney transplant cost, quality of life after kidney transplant, registering for kidney transplant,  choosing a hospital for kidney transplant, criteria for a living donor, legal approvals and documents, kidney transplant from a deceased organ donor and the steps in involved in deceaseddonor transplants.

She went on explaining about the deceased organ donation scenario in India, waiting list, organ distribution system living donor vs deceased donor – different aspects and requirements in accordance with the Transplant Law , penalties for violation of the provisions of the law. She also spoke about ‘Anudaan’- MOHAN Foundation’s new initiative for unprivileged organ failure patients.

Following her, Mr. Subramanyam (kidney transplant recipient), Mrs. Seethalakshmy (donated one of her kidneys to her husband, Mr. Subramanyan) shared their experiences and journey before and after renal transplant. Following that the floor was open for Q&A

The session came to an end with the vote of thanks from Ms. Sujatha Suriyamoorthi. She thanked the audience for their active participation. She also acknowledged SBI Foundation and SBI Card for their immense contribution in supporting the noble cause.

Close to 30 participants attended the workshops through Zoom App. The workshop was also live on MOHAN Foundation’s YouTube platform (94 views) for the general public.
