Organ Donation Awareness for Social Work Students of Cauvery College for Women, Trichy

Amity Club, the Postgraduate and Research Department of Social Work of the Cauvery College for Women, Trichy organized Observance of Organ Donation Day on 11th August 2021. MOHAN Foundation was invited to be a part of this virtual event which was attended by around 85 people including undergraduate and postgraduate students and faculty from the Social Work Department. The event was organized and coordinated by Ms. Rani P L, Assistant Professor from the department. 

The event was kicked off with the rendition of a prayer song, followed by a Welcome Address by Dr. Metilda Buvaneswari G, Associate Professor. Ms. Kanaga G, Professor and Dean of Alumnae Relations delivered the Felicitation Address. Ms. Kaviya, a student, introduced Ms. Ishwarya Thyagarajan, Research Associate of MOHAN Foundation, the Chief Guest for the occasion. 

Ms. Ishwarya made an elaborate presentation about organ donation and transplantation, covering a wide range of topics including the following:

  • Concepts of organ donation and transplantation
  • Types of death and donors
  • Organs and tissues that can be donated under different circumstances
  • Brain death
  • The Transplantation of Human Organs Act
  • Voluntary body donation
  • Myths
  • Statistics – national and international numbers
  • Advances in the transplant field 

To keep the audience engaged, a trivia quiz on Tamil films that dealt with organ donation was also included during the presentation and received encouraging response from the audience. The students were highly responsive to the questions raised and shared their thoughts on many aspects that were discussed. The following questions were raised by the students following Ms. Ishwarya’s presentation:

  • Ethical dilemmas in living donor transplantation
  • Impact of COVID on donation rates
  • Could COVID-19 affected people become organ donors after recovery?
  • Side effects of organ transplant
  • When can one not donate blood?
  • Matching of organs for transplant
  • Organ rejection 

The event lasted for more than one hour with the students and faculty promising to do their best to spread the message of organ donation. The formal vote of thanks was delivered by a student Ms. Pavithra. Ms. Kanaga and Ms Rani thanked both the speaker and the participants and commented that the session was an enriching one. MOHAN Foundation is thankful for the opportunity.
