Online Awareness Session on Organ Donation Conducted for the NSS Unit of Keshav Mahavidayalaya

On Aug 13, 2021, MOHAN Foundation was invited to conduct an online awareness session on organ donation for the students of the NSS unit of Keshav Mahavidayalaya. The session was initiated by Ms. Meher Gulati, president of the NSS unit who had previously attended such sessions arranged by MOHAN Foundation in Chandigarh and subsequently connected with Ms. Pallavi Kumar, Executive Director, MOHAN Foundation to discuss the possibility of organizing an online awareness session regarding organ donation Dr. Muneet Kaur Sahi, Programme Manager, MOHAN Foundation was invited as the speaker for the session. 

 

The session was attended by the student members of NSS (National Service Scheme) unit of Keshav Mahavidayalaya. National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Keshav Mahavidayalaya promotes community service through events like cleanliness drives, free health checkup camps, blood donation camps, self-defense classes for girls, lectures on health and nutrition, educational camps in slums, anti-tobacco campaign, street rallies in nearby areas for spreading awareness about prevention of polio and dengue, etc. This session was arranged as a part of the health-based project named ‘Nirog’ run by NSS KMV, this project aims to promote healthy living and social, physical, and mental health.

 

At the beginning of the session, Ms. Deepanshi Gupta, member NSS KMV welcomed all the participants and gave a brief introduction of the topic of the session and introduced Dr. Muneet Kaur Sahi as the speaker for the day. Ms. Deepanshi was the moderator for the event, and she opened the session and set the rules for attending the session.

 

Dr. Muneet explained the concept of organ donation with the help of a PowerPoint presentation. She initiated the session by asking the students according to them why are organ transplants needed. Dr. Muneet then also discussed with the students about organs which can be donated after natural death and brain death and asked students about their perceptions about donation after death. She also explained the role of MOHAN Foundation and how the youth can be the ambassadors to promote the cause of organ donation. A short informative film was shown to the audience to explain the concept of “brain death.”

  • Organ donation Myths and Facts

 

The participants were interactive during the presentation and asked questions related to organ donation. To name a few:

  • What is the impact of COVID-19 on the status of organ donation in India?
  • Can we as students donate our organs?
  • Can we donate organs after its recovery from a disease?
  • Can an individual with a history of diabetes donate organs?
  • Is asthma a contraindication for organ donation?
  • Does being on ventilator mean brain death? Is directed donation possible in brain death cases?
  • Is there enough infrastructure throughout India for Organ Donation?
  • Can a person with history of psychiatric disorder donate organs?

 

At the end, Ms. Deepanshi Gupta gave the vote of thanks on behalf of NSS KMV and thanked Dr. Muneet for the greatly informative session. On behalf of the audience, she thanked MOHAN Foundation and Dr. Muneet for sharing with student’s information on a topic of great importance and relevance.

 

Close to 50 participants attended the session.
