On 24^th April 2021, the Association of Nurse Executives (India) – Delhi NCR Chapter conducted a virtual event themed, ‘Gift of Life - Renal Transplant Nursing’ from 3 pm to 5 pm for nurses from all sectors across India. The Association of Nurse Executives (India) (ANEI) is an Indian Nursing Association that was launched on 11^th February 2017 under the aegis of Association of Healthcare Providers India (AHPI). ANEI is present in 14 states right now. Its vision is to provide leadership, professional development and research to advance nursing practice, nursing education and patient care and contributing effectively to nation’s health goals (www.anei.in).

Ms. Thankam Gomez (President and Key Founder Member, ANEI) and Dr. Raminder Kalra (Vice President, ANEI) welcomed the faculty and participants. The two-hour session covered the key components of kidney transplantation and the role of nurses in the entire process. Prof. (Col) Dr. D Mukherjee, Director Nephrology &Transplant Medicine, BL Kapoor Hospital & Max Gurugram spoke about the need and importance of transplant nursing. The pre-operative assessment, peri-operative management and post-transplantation care in kidney transplantation were covered by Lt Col Anita D Nair, Transplant Manager, Army Hospital (R&R), Ms. Geeta, Clinical Instructor - Operation Theater Complex, Medanta – The Medicity and Lt Col Sandhya V Nair (Retd), Deputy Nursing Superintendent, Medanta – The Medicity, respectively. Ms. Neha Sharma, a kidney transplant recipient spoke about how nurses become an anchor for patients and that in her case it was Lt Col Sandhya V Nair who was always there for her.

Dr. Sumana Navin, Course Director, MOHAN Foundation spoke on the subject, ‘Nurse as Transplant Coordinator – a Triumph.’ She said that transplant coordination was an excellent career opportunity for nurses. She outlined the exciting scope of work for nurses in this area and emphasised that nurses in UK, Australia, Spain and USA had clearly defined roles in organ donation and transplantation. At the end of the session, she also spoke about MOHAN Foundation’s one-year online course – Post Graduate Diploma in Transplant Coordination and Grief Counselling (PGDTC), the one-month online course- Transplant Coordination Professional Certificate, the Brain Death Certification App and the Donor Optimisation App. These Apps are handy tools for personnel, especially nurses, involved in organ donation and transplantation.
