Synchrony Dialogues with MOHAN Foundation - “A Motivational Talk by Dr. Venkat Sumantran”

On March 6, 2021, MOHAN Foundation in association with Tamilnad Kidney Research Foundation (TANKER), International Federation of Kidney Foundations- World Kidney Alliance (IFKF-WKA) and Transplant Recipients of India & Organ failure patients - a Movement to Provide Hope (TRIOMPH) organised a webinar to mark the World Kidney Day which was titled, “A motivational talk by Dr. Venkat Sumantran “as part of the ongoing series of webinars called Synchrony Dialogues with MOHAN Foundation. The webinar was moderated by Ms. Jaya Jairam, Centre Head, MOHAN Foundation-Mumbai and it was live on MOHAN Foundation’s social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram & Twitter. 

Dr. Venkat Sumantran is a business leader, technocrat, academic and author with over 30 years of experience in mobility across the US, Europe and Asia. He is an advisor to several Fortune-100 organisations and has spoken in multiple national and international forums. He is also a kidney donor himself. 

At the beginning of the session, Ms. Jaya Jairam welcomed the audience and gave a brief introduction of TRIOMPH - a newly launched patient support group by MOHAN Foundation. She also informed about MOHAN Foundation’s new programme called Anudaan-Making Transplants Affordable. She also informed the participants about the upcoming programmes of MOHAN Foundation on advocacy for health insurance, subsidised diagnostics & subsidised medicines which will be launched soon. 

Mrs. Latha A. Kumaraswami, Managing Trustee, TANKER Foundation & President –Elect & Secretary & Treasurer -IFKF-WKA informed about World Kidney Day and about its institution. She then introduced and welcomed Dr. Venkat Sumantran to begin the session. 

Dr. Sumantran began the session with expressing his gratitude towards MOHAN Foundation, IFKF-WKA and TANKER Foundation for bringing prominence to the issue of Kidney Disease. He said that being a kidney donor brought him much closer to the issue of chronic kidney disease and encouraged him to raise awareness on this important issue. He informed that potentially 17% of total population in India is vulnerable to kidney disease so there is an urgent need to address this issue with great urgency if we want to live our life in a very healthy and productive manner as a country. Major pathways of kidney disease are diabetes, elevated blood pressure and these pathways have emerged more frequently because of evolution of India. As development accelerates in India, we are lapsing into poor lifestyle, high calorie intake and less healthy diets. 

He informed that TANKER Foundation has helped people with over 380 dialysis sessions and screened over 35,000 people. It has been working closely with MOHAN Foundation to spread the words and to find ways to manage chronic kidney disease in India. 

At the end of the session, Dr. Sumantran motivated the audience to pay attention to their lifestyle and to be stress free. He said regular exercise and healthy diet is very important to attain a healthy life. He also encouraged the participants to pledge for organ donation.
