Webinar on Organ Donation for Public Health Students

On 1st July 2020, an awareness session on organ donation was organized for the 1st year students of MPH at Indian Institute of Public Health, Hyderabad via a webinar. Around 17 students attended the session.

Dr. Syeda Sana Ali, an intern at MOHAN Foundation initiated the session by giving a brief overview about the importance of organ donation, the meaning of brain death and statistics of deceased organ donation globally and in India. Myths, sociocultural and religious factors were addressed as well. The evolution of organ donation program in India, from the passing of Transplantation of Human Organs Act 1994 to the current scenario was outlined. Role of Jeevandaan, the organ donation state body of Telangana was discussed and data of organ failure patients registered and organs allocated was compared.

The entire process of deceased organ donation, from brain death to retrieval of organs and transplanting them, organ allocation, the role of transplant coordinators and the significance of an organ donor card were summarized.

Mrs. Lalitha Raghuram, the Country Director of MOHAN Foundation shared her experience being part of the organ donation cause. Certain issues faced by the family of the deceased were addressed and significance of donating organs was highlighted. In the end the virtues of organ donation were highlighted and participants were requested to consider registering as organ donors through the MOHAN Foundation app or website.
